Activity: Robot Says

Activity: Robot Says

Age Group: Grade R (5–6 years old)

Category: Unplugged Coding Activities

Duration: 10–15 minutes

Materials: None (just an open space in the classroom)

Objective:

  • Introduce learners to basic coding concepts such as sequencing, direction, and following instructions.
  • Develop listening skills, problem-solving, and teamwork.
  • Encourage logical thinking through playful, screen-free activities.

Instructions:

  1. Choose one learner to be the Robot. The rest of the class will be the Programmers.
  2. The Programmers give the Robot step-by-step instructions to move around the classroom. Examples of commands include:
    • Move forward 1 step
    • Turn right
    • Turn left
    • Jump
    • Clap hands
  3. The Robot must follow the instructions exactly. If a mistake is made, the Programmers can help the Robot “debug” by giving corrected steps.
  4. After a few rounds, rotate so that every child has a chance to be the Robot.

Tips for Success:

  • Keep it simple: Start with 2–3 commands per round and gradually increase complexity.
  • Encourage collaboration: Let learners work together to plan instructions.
  • Celebrate mistakes: Teach children that mistakes are part of coding—they help us learn!
  • Integrate learning: Use this activity to reinforce directional language, counting, and patterns.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this activity, learners will be able to:

  • Follow and give simple instructions sequentially.
  • Understand directional concepts (left, right, forward, backward).
  • Work collaboratively to solve problems and “debug” instructions.
  • Develop early coding skills without the need for screens.

Why I Love This Activity:

“Robot Says” is a playful and interactive way to introduce coding in the Grade R classroom. Children love taking turns being the Robot, and it’s amazing to see how quickly they learn to plan sequences and give precise instructions. This activity builds confidence, teamwork, and logical thinking—all while having fun!
